Joint Board
Roll Call:
Dylan O’Donoghue arrived late
Guest Speaker:
Russell K. Osgood – Addressed the issues of College Improvements, in particular the hiring of a new position of full time Wellness coordinator – Jen Jacobsen. President Osgood continued discussing the effects of the Stock Market crash, claiming the college endowment is fine (due to very careful management). Another central issue Osgood addressed that has surfaced in the first month of school is the alcohol problem – physical health problems (hospitalizations – almost as many as the number of previous years (at this point), urges watching each other and keeping attendance of alcohol levels). President Osgood also informed Joint Board of the visit of Trustees on Oct. 3-5. At this time the school will dedicate the addition on the Noyce Science Center, Osgood asked for a fair attendance to the events; college “plan” completion with exception of library, classes; NCAA Accreditation team – recommend full 10 year accreditation without report backs (Good news!). They left claiming Grinnell had a diverse, ferocious environment, and were stunned to find the attitude of the students matched the self-study; the Faculty, staff and students said same thing. For more information go to the Grinnell College Website -> office of president -> “marketing memo.” Students are encouraged to read the memo and reply to Osgood as this is in accordance with Strategic Plan Strategy 6 – better promoting Grinnell College
Questions for Osgood:
Increase in first year students – remain 1500, accept less in the following years to remain under 1200; Loan Cap – Most startling factor, almost no one dropped out after being accepted (lowest attrition rate)

If you do not turn in an application you are still eligible to run for senator, but must do so as a write-in. An open forum will be held in JRC 101 at 9 pm on Wednesday 9/10. Everyone is encouraged to attend and meet your cluster candidates. Voting will begin on Friday 9/12.

On behalf of the Grinnell College SGA Cabinet 08-09 I’d like to extend a warm welcome back to campus. And another thank god it’s (already) Friday. We hope your first week of school has gone well, for the first years we’re sure NSO was more than you hoped for and full of interesting events to keep yourselves occupied. A special thanks to John Burrows, Alex Pietz, Cyrus Witthaus and Jen Krohn for their effort organizing a great beginning to the class of 2012’s stay on campus.
The cabinet is in session and has posted office hours, but more often than not will be around for you to stop by. We look forward to serving you this school year.
According to USA Today representative Jason Meyers, Grinnell is a “New York Times” campus. Read more about Grinnell’s newspaper consumption by checking out the following charts (.doc) and student comments (.doc)
