Grinnell College students recently elected Neo Morake ‘09 as President, Julie Hoye ‘09 as Vice-President of Academic Affairs, and John Burrows ‘10 as Vice-President of Student Affairs for next year’s SGA. Congratulations to our new executives! In the coming weeks they will be making selections for cabinet appointments and beginning to plan for next year. Feel free to contact them or [sga1] about the transition!

First, congratulations to new Vice-President of Affairs Julie Hoye and Vice-President of Student Affairs John Burrows! Their statements may be read on the Cabinet pages and results have been posted on PioneerWeb.

A new election for SGA president will take place from Friday at 12:01AM to 11:59AM. The following is a letter from Election Board explaining why:

On Wednesday night, Election Board received a grievance that candidate Neo Morake postered on the windows of the Bucksbaum Fine Arts building. After extensive deliberation and confirmation that the postering had taken place, Election Board ruled that this was a violation of the By-Laws of the SGA Constitution, Article III, Section 1C, which states:

“Campaign materials are not allowed on any doorframe of the campus dining hall, any doors or windows of non-residential buildings on campus, and may not be distributed in a campus dining hall or in any space where a class is in session. Candidates forfeit their status as official candidates if they are involved in any way in the violation of this by-law.” You may view the SGA constitution in the SGA offices or download it.

All official candidates were given these guidelines as part of their applications and signed a statement that they would adhere to them. Election Board ruled that Neo Morake was disqualified as an official candidate and a new election must be run. The new round of voting will begin on Friday morning at 12:01AM and end at 11:59AM. Neo is still eligible to take office and may run as a write-in candidate. Election Board will not release the results of the original election as it was not valid. It is also Election Board’s policy not to reveal the identity of the person who filed the grievance.

Our purpose is to uphold the SGA Constitution and By-Laws in a manner that is accountable, transparent and fair to the student body and all candidates. If you have any questions or concerns about this process, please reply to this e-mail, contact Election Board or your senators. Thank you for all your patience and support.

Sincerely,
Election Board
